Fishing Girls
Madagascar, 2009
I wanted to show the immense joy an abundant, protected ocean could provide to families and children across the planet. These two little girls work every day to help support their community in southern Madagascar. With few opportunities available in this rural part of the world, and even fewer opportunities for girls, fishing is one of the only means of providing for their families. The weight on their shoulders is heavy, but they still manage to have fun. After we waded out from the beach, the pair seized either side of their handmade net and charged through the surf, shrieking with laughter and peppering my lens with salt water.
