Every year, thousands of Mobula rays gather in the Gulf of California to breed, following one another in great swirling circles that form a living vortex. Every so often, a ray bursts from the surface. Drifting at the edge of this extraordinary gathering, I watched as these graceful giants carried out one of the ocean’s oldest rituals.
