I stood shivering in the dense fog rising from Monterey Bay and listened carefully for the splash of a fin or the telltale sound of a clearing blowhole. Finally, just as my arms were growing tired from the weight of my lens, the silence was broken by a burst of salty air and a massive fluke lifted quietly from the deep.
