In the cold air, I watched as a puma cub leaned in, pressing her face gently to her mother’s in a tender nuzzle. They curled up in the grass together and dozed on the windswept steppes near Torres del Pain in Chile. Years ago, cats like this were shot on sight to protect sheep. Today, however, many ranches have shifted course, recognizing the value of wildlife in drawing photographers and travellers from around the world. As I photographed the pair, I felt the weight of what has been lost and the promise of what could still be protected now that pumas are regaining their place in the ecosystem.
