Kayapó boy with Cerebral Palsy
Poor coordination, stiff and weak muscles, trouble swallowing and speaking, and tremors are a few of the terrible symptoms of cerebral palsy. The cause is unknown and the onset is from birth. The prognosis, incurable. Many indigenous people would not allow a child that is born with such disabilities to live but for some reason, in this village, this child has been spared. Confined to a hammock and unable to access any medical care, his mother is the only caregiver he has. I have seen her, tenderly kissing him and laughing with him. I have marveled at her strength as she carries his limp body to the river to be washed. To many his life might be miserable, but I look at his smile and I wonder.
